How CTC becomes in-hand salary

CTC (cost to company) is everything the employer spends on you in a year. Some of it never reaches your bank account: the employer’s PF contribution, gratuity if your company includes it, and the employer’s ESI share on lower salaries.

Gross salary is CTC minus those employer costs. From gross, three things come off every month: your own PF (12% of basic pay, usually on a maximum of ₹15,000), professional tax (up to ₹200 a month in most states that charge it, and ₹2,500 a year in total), and income tax deducted as TDS.

Income tax on the new regime starts above ₹4 lakh, but a salaried person with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pays nothing because of the Section 87A rebate. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction, that means no tax on a gross salary up to ₹12.75 lakh a year. Health and education cess of 4% is added to any tax due.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CTC and in-hand salary?

CTC is the employer’s total yearly cost for you, including their PF share and often gratuity. In-hand salary is what reaches your bank each month after your PF, professional tax and income tax are deducted.

How much is in-hand for a CTC of ₹6 lakh?

With basic pay at 50% of CTC, PF on the ₹15,000 ceiling and ₹200 professional tax, a ₹6 lakh CTC gives about ₹46,200 a month in hand. There is no income tax at this level on the new regime.

Is there income tax on a ₹12 lakh salary?

On the new regime, no tax is due if taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less, thanks to the Section 87A rebate. Salaried people also get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, so a gross salary up to ₹12.75 lakh is tax-free.

Is professional tax the same in every state?

No. Each state sets its own slabs, and some states don’t charge it. Most that do charge up to ₹200 a month, capped at ₹2,500 a year. Set it to 0 if your state has none.
